Singer Katy Perry loses copyright infringement case after jury finds that she copied sound samples from a Christian rap song for her own tune ‘Dark horse’

Singer Katy Perry has been found guilty of copying a number of elements from a Christian rap song for her own track ‘Dark Horse’.

The jury found that Perry did indeed partially copy the song ‘Joyful noise’, from Christian rapper Flame (real name, Marcus Gray) for her own tune. ‘Dark Horse’ was successful enough, spending four weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in early 2014. Additionally, ‘Dark Horse’ earned Perry a Grammy nomination.

According to the ruling, ‘Dark Horse’ borrows heavily from ‘Joyful Noise’s beat and instrumental arrangements.

Ms. Perry is now liable to pay substantial damages to Flame for copyright infringement.
