Sinn Fein is today claiming that the Irish Government is ‘misrepresenting’ homelessness figures ‘by at least 20%.’
According to Sinn Fein, someone is not counted as ‘homeless’ unless they’re using an official service funded by the Department of Housing. This technicality alone immediately excludes most people sleeping rough. Also, always according to Sinn Fein, women and children staying in shelters, homeless people staying in ‘unofficial’ shelters, or people living in direct provision centers are also not counted as ‘homeless.’
No fewer than 52 people have died in Irish streets so far this year.
