Sinn Fein: Direct Provision system should be scrapped

The Sinn Féin party has heavily criticised the Direct Provision system saying it is no place to have children.

The party made its comments after they reissued calls for the entire scheme to be scrapped. The news comes after HIQA issued a report which outlines a number of concerns about the welfare of youngsters who are being raised in these centres. According to the report over 14% of children in the system have been referred to the child and family agency within the course of a year.

The report has angered Sinn Féin party member Padraig MacLochlainn who says the system is simply just not good enough. Mr MacLohlainn said: “We recently completed a report into the system.” “And what we’re seeing now collectively in the HIQA report, in our report, and through the working group which is to report soon is repeated evidence that the direct provision system is no place to have young children.
