Sinn Fein flip flop – Shinners defend chance of heart on hate speech law

Despite allegations that it had backed the Hate Crime Bill in the past, Sinn Féin has stood by its desire to repeal the law, reports RTE.

In the Dáil in April of last year, the party’s TDs cast votes in support of the Bill.

According to Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty, they voted against the bill in the upper house in June and had not backed it in the Seanad.

“We had raised serious concerns with this legislation right through the process and had tabled a number of amendments. The Government in its arrogance refused to listen, not only to Sinn Féin’s amendment but also to the other amendments that were coming from the opposition,” he said, reports RTE.

Mr. Doherty said that too much time had been spent on the proposed law, which lacked bipartisan support, and that it was time to put an end to the “farce” that was the Bill.

A representative for Justice Minister Helen McEntee stated that changes to the Bill are currently being reviewed, reports RTE.
