Uproar as Ryanair cancels over 300 flights across Europe due to French air traffic strike

Large portions of Europe are expected to see delays and flight cancellations today as a result of authorities’ inability to come to an agreement with some French air traffic controllers in order to prevent a strike, reports RTE.

The French civil aviation authority, DGAC, announced yesterday that it had requested that 75% of the flights at Paris Orly airport, 55% of the flights at Paris Charles-De-Gaulle airport, and 65% of the flights at Marseille airport be cancelled today.

France regularly has strikes affecting air traffic control, which restricts flights into and out of the nation, reports RTE.

Ryanair renewed pressure on European Union authorities by announcing that it will have to cancel over 300 flights due to the strike, including flights from Ireland and Britain to Spain or Italy.

“French air traffic controllers are free to go on strike, that’s their right, but we should be cancelling French flights, not flights leaving Ireland, going to Italy, or flights from Germany to Spain or Scandinavia to Portugal,” Ryanair Chief Executive Michael O’Leary said in a statement, reports RTE.
