The age old battle of the sexes has being going on since the dawn of time and recent studies apparently show that both genders are better at specific tasks, but now it seems the fairer sex has the won the argument as to who needs more sleep as scientists say women need longer spells in bed due to the fact they multitask.

The latest news will surly create many debates at home this coming weekend because according to Jim Horne, an emeritus professor at Loughborough University, women need more sleep because they are deprived of a well earned rest due to their work ethics and active minds.

It is believed Prof Horne came to the conclusion that women need more sleep after carrying out a sleep study on 210 men and women. Prof Horne said: “Women’s brains are wired differently from men’s and are more complex, so their sleep need will be slightly greater.” “The more of your brain you use during the day, the more of it that needs to recover and, consequently, the more sleep you need.

“Women tend to multi-task – they do lots at once and are flexible – and so they use more of their actual brain than men do. “Because of that, their sleep need is greater.”

The extensive sleep study showed that on average women needed an extra 20 minutes in bed each morning. Prof Horne also highlighted that health problems are more common in women due to a lack of sleep.

Prof Horne said: “for women, poor sleep is strongly associated with high levels of psychological distress and greater feelings of hostility, depression, and anger. “In contrast, these feelings were not associated with the same degree of sleep disruption in men.”

There you have it ladies, a well deserved lie-in awaits for you this weekend!
