
Between Friday, December 20th, and Sunday, December 29th, there were eight road deaths and eighteen major crashes that left twenty persons seriously and potentially dead, reports Breaking News.
A special road traffic enforcement operation is being carried out by An Garda SÃochána throughout the Christmas season. It started on Friday, November 29th, and will last until Monday, January 6th, 2025.
An Garda SÃochána conducted more than 2,500 checkpoints during this time, including both routine, high-visibility policing checkpoints and mandatory Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checks, reports Breaking News.
During this time, 268 persons were arrested for driving while intoxicated (drugs and alcohol), with 74 of the arrests occurring during the weekend alone.
An Garda SÃochána and its road safety partners, GoSafe, used mobile safety camera vans to identify over 3,750 drivers who had committed speeding violations, reports Breaking News.
For a variety of breaches under the Road Traffic Act of 1961, gardaà seized more than 550 automobiles.
Irish roads will be congested during the New Year’s celebrations, the Gardaà have warned.
“It will also be one of the periods during which road users are at the highest risk of being involved in a fatal or serious road traffic collision. To date, 178 people have lost their lives in road traffic collisions on Irish roads. An Garda SÃochána is appealing to all those who will be taking to the roads over the New Year period and as people return to home and to work at the end of the week and early next week to slow down, take extra care and to give your driving your full attention,” reports Breaking News.
