The world of connected objects is becoming increasingly rich and attractive, offering original and fun functionalities that can have a real practical impact on our daily lives. Just look at the success of connected light bulbs, smart devices such as Alexa or Google Home and home automation. Today, almost one out of three smartphone owners is equipped with a smartwatch.

What is a smartwatch?

The smartwatch as it is presented today has met a real interest in the 2010s. Initially, the concept of the smartwatch was based on the possibility of a multitude of tasks: calculator, schedule, game, etc. Since then, the watch has become connected.

It works through applications associated with a smartphone. Let’s discover the main features of smartwatches:

SMS/calls: connected to a smartphone, it replaces your phone. Directly on its touch screen, you can send and receive texts, or make and receive calls. Conveniently, the watch syncs to your phonebook so you can find all your contacts. Of course, if you use Messenger or Whatsapp for your calls and messages, it is also possible to do so with the smartwatch.

Games: Whether you’re an Android or Apple team, it’s possible to download games to connected watches. Puzzles, slots, platform games, there’s plenty to choose from and the catalogue of smartwatch compatible games is constantly growing! It’s the perfect way to pass the time on public transport!

Music: you can choose your playlist and adjust the volume of the music playing through the headphones. You can of course press “pause”, or skip to the next song… It’s also great for listening to podcasts or audio books.

Sport: as it has built-in movement sensors, your watch can be very useful to accompany you during your sporting activities. It records the number of steps you take (pedometer function) and tracks your route to evaluate the distance you have covered. Useful for walking or running. The watch can also remind you of your fitness goals and count the calories you have burned: an ally to help you stay fit or be more active.

Health: some models of connected watches have a heart sensor that continuously measures your pulse and gives your heart rate. It is also sometimes possible to evaluate the quality of your sleep or your stress level thanks to this accessory.

GPS: no more excuses for getting lost! The watch geo-locates you in real time and shows you your geographical position and your route.

Applications: you can access your favourite applications, receive notifications from your social networks. The latest watches even have cameras, allowing you to send snaps and share stories easily on all your social networks.

Why wear a smartwatch?

At a time when smartphones have filled our pockets, is it useful to have a smartwatch? Isn’t it just another gadget that you get tired of relatively quickly? In reality, it all depends on individual habits.

The smartwatch is also creating new customs in everyday life. Carrying all your contacts, information and communication with others on your wrist can be really useful in day-to-day life. The watch is light and practical to carry, far from the increasingly cumbersome smartphones.

Moreover, when travelling, we sometimes shudder at the thought of damaging our precious phone by dropping it: the watch will always remain well attached. If it is waterproof, it can even be carried in water. What a pleasure to be able to read a text message in the sea!

Ironically, even though the smartwatch needs a smartphone to function, it allows you to get away from it: having all the necessary notifications and information available at a glance means you don’t have to stay glued to your phone.
