Snowfalls have now cleared, but Met Eireann warns of severe weather in the wake of Storm Freya

Large swathes of Ireland were unexpectedly covered by snow on Sunday, prompting Met Eireann to extend existing weather warnings. While snowfalls have now largely ceased, the national forecaster has warned that Ireland is in line for some severe weather over the next 48 hours.

The start of the working week began cold and dreary for many, and the weather is only going to get worse as the day goes on, with hail showers and thunderstorms likely later on.

Monday night will be rather cold, with temperatures sinking to about 1C.

Tuesday is expected to be slightly better, with daytime temperatures of around 9C, and less rainfall overall.
