As he readies his goodbye speech to the country prior to Donald Trump’s homecoming, US President Joe Biden has cautioned that the “soul of America” is at risk, reports RTE.
In his primetime address from the White House’s Oval Office, the 82-year-old Democrat is anticipated to highlight the accomplishments of his one-term presidency.
Prior to his speech at 8 p.m. (1 a.m. Irish time tomorrow), Mr. Biden also sent out a letter to the American people that subtly attacked Mr. Trump.
“I ran for president because I believed that the soul of America was at stake. The very nature of who we are was at stake. And, that’s still the case,” Mr Biden said in the letter, reports RTE.
“History is in your hands. The power is in your hands. The idea of America lies in your hands. We just have to keep the faith and remember who we are,” he said, reports RTE.
The United States, according to Mr. Biden, was stronger than it was four years ago when it “stood in a winter of peril” following Mr. Trump’s turbulent first term, the Covid epidemic, and what he described as “the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War.”
Days after Trump supporters attacked the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, in an attempt to overturn his electoral defeat, Mr. Biden was sworn in, reports RTE.
Although he did not specifically identify Mr. Trump, his remarks amply reflected earlier statements in which he said that Mr. Trump and his followers were endangering the US’s “soul” and that this was why he chose to run in the 2020 election.
Mr. Biden continued by saying that he had requested that the White House also make public a lengthy list of the accomplishments he said his administration had made on a variety of topics, including the economy, healthcare, and climate change, reports RTE.
Even though the Democrats’ election defeat was largely caused by popular outrage over the expense of living, he claimed that the US had the “strongest economy in the world” and was lowering inflation.
The departing president has devoted a significant portion of his last days in office to repairing the damage caused by his choice to run for a second term in spite of his advanced age, reports RTE.
After a terrible debate with 78-year-old Trump, who went on to defeat Vice President Kamala Harris handily, Mr. Biden was compelled to withdraw from the campaign last June.
However, he said that serving our country for more than 50 years had been the “privilege of my life,” reports RTE.
Just two days have passed since Mr. Biden’s speech to the country, during which he stated that he had left the United States stronger on the international scene.
It has become customary for US presidents to give a goodbye speech before they step down.
The first president, George Washington, renounced a third term in 1796 and sent out what is arguably his most famous letter, reports RTE.
