Special needs schools will not open tomorrow after unions reject proposals amid safety fears

The Department of Education have confirmed that schools for special needs students will not reopen tomorrow.

According to RTE News, the Department’s plan to reopen schools on a staggered basis for special needs children have been shelved after unions voiced concerns over safety.

It is understood that both the INTO and Forsa voted in favour to reject the Government’s plans.

Both unions say that although there were lengthy discussions between themselves and the Department of Education, they feel that efforts to reassure school staff that it was safe for schools to open limited services to students had failed.

Meanwhile the Department of Education say the lack of cooperation from the unions is the main reason why plans to reopen schools will schools not go ahead.

They added that their efforts included consistent and frequent engagement with official and ministerial level.

However both unions and the Department of Education say they are willing to hold further discussions on the matter in order to facilitate the reopening of schools.
