The Liberal spoke with an off-duty garda who told us that gardai are working off the premise that travellers were involved in the boxing event that went badly wrong in Roscommon.

A man is receiving medical attention at University Hospital Galway for wounds he received when an armed group disrupted a boxing match in County Roscommon.

During the under-14 National Championship quarterfinals last evening in Castlerea, emergency services were sent to The Hub venue.

According to the Gardaí, the group of masked and armed males entered the venue during the event, resulting in the violent confrontation.

The event was canceled by the Irish Athletic Boxing Association, which denounced the occurrence.

In a statement the IABA said that it was “aware of a serious incident during the final stages of the 2024 National Boy 4 Championship quarter finals in Castlerea. That such an incident could occur at a children’s sporting event is abhorrent, and is roundly condemned by every member of the Irish boxing family. Gardaí are investigating,” reports RTE.

“IABA, its officials, host club Castlerea BC, and streaming partners, StreamSport, are ready to assist gardaí with their inquiries in any way possible,” reports RTE.
