The new state of the art speed camera system has officially gone into operation at Dublin Port Tunnel today.
The new system which cost €550,000 to install will measure motorists speeds from one end of the tunnel to the other.
Under the current speed limit of 80km/h it currently takes the average motorist 3 minutes 36 seconds to get from the beginning of the tunnel to the end.
Speaking about the launch a Department of Transport spokesperson said the new system will actively stop speeding in the tunnel as anyone who is caught completing their journey under the average time (above) will receive a €80 fine along with three penalty points on their licence.
