“Stab in the back” – Fears Brussels are preparing to dump Ireland from EU single market to solve Brexit impasse over border

The government are anxious as rumours persist that the Republic may be excluded from the EU’s single market as part of emergency measures to solve the impasse over the Brexit settlement in Northern Ireland.

As Ireland border will be a frontier of the EU, Brussels is demanding that Dublin enforce border controls, but any enforcement of the border is being rejected by both London and Dublin,

With this situation unable to be resolved the Brussels elite may dump Ireland from the EU’s single market altogether as the UK refuses to submit to their demands surrounding regulations of things such as food and travel.

Ahead of a key meeting Wednesday with his U.K. counterpart, Commission Vice President Maroš Šefčovič threatened in an op-ed for the Telegraph that “the EU will not be shy in reacting swiftly, firmly and resolutely” if the U.K. does not relent.

Irish officials fear that even the possibility of the plan, which would amount to treating Irish goods going to other EU members as coming from a third country, will take the pressure off the U.K. to live up to its commitments under the Brexit deal Politico reports.
