Many people feared that the government and Tony Holohan “just wanted an excuse” to not lift the draconian restrictions in Ireland, and it looks as though they’ve possibly gotten one.
It’s understood that that there are “real concerns” in the government that reopening Ireland’s economy and seeing restrictions lifted may be pushed back for some time due to the so-called Delta variant aka the Indian variant.
The UK is facing an extension to their full lifting of restrictions of possibly one month.
It’s understood that Tony Holohan is said to have made the government aware of his concerns and what risks the Delta variant could pose.
As it stands, Ireland has around 135 cases of the variant with Northern Ireland having considerably more. Nothing is certain at this time, but it’s feared that Micheal Martin, Tony Holohan, Ramon Ryan, Simon Harris, Stephen Donnelly and Leo Varadkar may all put their foot down on reopening Ireland for the foreseeable future.
