There has been a suspected Covid-19 epidemic at Letterkenny University Hospital, and a large number of individuals are visiting the emergency room, reports RTE.
With 209 patients on Monday, the LUH Emergency Department witnessed one of its biggest attendances ever.
The hospital is seeing a similar high attendance today as it did yesterday, when 155 individuals visited the emergency department.
There are 16 patients awaiting admission and 38 patients in the emergency department at the moment, reports RTE.
Every bed in the hospital is being used.
Patients must wait a long time to be admitted from the emergency department to a ward bed.
According to Saolta, every attempt is being made to release patients who are prepared to return home as soon as possible in order to provide room for those who require admission, reports RTE.
Saolta stated that they are “committed to treating everyone who presents at the ED but we do so strictly in order of medical priority” .
“The hospital acknowledges that these delays are very difficult for patients and their families and apologises for the inconvenience and distress these delays cause,” it stated, reports RTE.
“We continue to request that people consider other options for non-emergency care such as Out of Hours GP and pharmacies before attending an ED.”
Ten patients are presently receiving Covid-19 treatment on a single hospital unit, reports RTE.
