Sunak still plans on sending migrants to Rwanda even though current asylum policy rejected

The British Prime Minister has vowed to introduce emergency legislation and a new deal with Rwanda that will ensure her flagship asylum policy is not blocked again after the UK Supreme Court ruled it illegal, reports RTE.

Rishi Sunak says he will end the carousel of legal challenges to the law recognizing the East African nation as a safe country after his “stop the boats” plans were blocked.

He is resisting pressure from the right of his Conservative Party to withdraw the UK from the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), but vowed: “I will not allow a foreign court to block these flights,” reports RTE.

The UK’s highest court has rejected the government’s appeal over its policy of illegally deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda.

Five senior judges unanimously ruled that the plans were unlawful because there was a risk that Rwanda would force asylum seekers to return to their country of origin.

Sacked Home Secretary Suella Braverman claimed Sunak would introduce legislation to block the ECHR, human rights law and other avenues of appeal.

Speaking from the ‘Stop the Boats’ podium at a news conference in London, Sunak said he disagreed with the Supreme Court’s ruling, which put the promise to stop small boat crossings at risk.

“But we need to end the merry-go-round. So I’m also announcing today that we will take the extraordinary step of introducing emergency legislation. This will enable parliament to confirm that with our new treaty, Rwanda is safe,” reports RTE.
