According to the latest Kantar’s Irish Grocery Market Share research, alcohol sales in supermarkets decreased by 8.6% last month, reports Breaking News.

It appears that people started off 2024 with ‘Dry January’ by choosing not to buy alcohol for the month.

Consumers spent €7.4 million less on alcohol during January compared to the same month last year.

The research also showed that sales of non-alcoholic beverages increased by 8.9%, with shoppers spending €125,000 more year-on-year, reports Breaking News.

However, sales of chilled or frozen plant-based products did not perform well despite nearly 38% of Irish households purchasing them. Sales fell by 2.6% during January.

Grocery inflation declined to 5.9% in the 12 weeks to 21 January 2024, which is down 1.2 percentage points, compared to 7.1% in December.

Premium own-label ranges were popular among shoppers who spent an additional €157 million on these lines with a growth of 10.3% when compared to the same period last year, reports Breaking News.
