There was bad news for staff at Supervalu in Newcastle West  after the Garvey Group announced that 45 jobs will be lost in the town’s store.

The announcement was made recently when the company released a statement stating that the store will cease trading on Saturday, April 25 “due to difficult trading conditions”.

The Garvey Group issued statement which said: “This is a difficult time for employees and we are committed to supporting them where possible in securing alternative employment,”. “A redundancy package, along with CV and interview training, will be offered to all staff. They will also be informed of potential redeployment options within the Garvey Group.” The news comes as blow to the town as the store employs 11 full-time staff and 34 part-time staff, the store is regarded as one of the town’s largest employers.

Meanwhile Local Fianna Fáil councillor Michael Collins described the closure as “devastating news for Newcastle West and the greater West Limerick area”. “It’s a huge blow to the staff, the management, and the company itself. You’d have to take time out to think of the local suppliers that feed into Garveys as well,”.
