Sydney on red alert following Bondi Beach attack

Sydney-siders, as they’re known, are on tender hooks today following the events on Sunday morning at a packed Bondi Beach.

A devastating terrorist attack unfolded at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach on Sunday morning, during a Hanukkah celebration organized by Chabad of Bondi. Two gunmen opened fire on the crowd gathered for the “Chanukah by the Sea” event, targeting the Jewish community on the first day of the festival.

The assault, which began around 6:45 pm local time, resulted in at least 16 deaths, including a prominent rabbi, and injured dozens more, with reports of up to 29 people hospitalized, some critically. Police responded swiftly, killing one attacker and leaving the second in critical condition. Improvised explosive devices were discovered in a nearby vehicle, heightening fears of broader threats.

A brave bystander tackled and disarmed one gunman, potentially saving lives amid the chaos. Authorities declared the incident an act of antisemitic terrorism, marking a dark day for Australia’s Jewish community amid rising concerns over hate incidents.
