The Cuan Álainn facility in Tallaght costs €350,000 to stay open per year.

The chairty currently has nine adults and eighteen children living in the refuge.

The refuge itself released a statement that unless the charity receives government funding the charity will be forced to close its door.

Seventy one women and ninety six children have been kept altogether by the charity since they opened their doors in 2012, but they can no longer afford to keep running.

Ned Brennan, the charity’s CEO stated “We have come to the regrettable decision to close the service in an orderly manner before the end of the year,”

Plans are underway to find other housing for those still living in the facility.

Mr Brennan had also said that they had applied for emergency funding many times from Tusla,  the government’s child and family agency, Tusla, and South Dublin County Council but has of yet to receive any government funding.

Tusla stated the facility was operating independent of the state sector which apparently means they are not entitled to funding.

Mr Brennan stated the urgent need for funding “Without this service, women and children may now have to return home to an abusive environment or be forced to enter homelessness,”.
