The Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has said that he believes that the country will have to get through another winter before we can put the pandemic behind us.
Speaking to Newstalk’s The Hard Shoulder programme, the Tanaiste said that he doesn’t think we can say that the pandemic is comfortably behind us until we reach herd immunity and we won’t know when that will be.
Varadkar told the programme that some restrictions are likely to remain in place until herd immunity is reached and even when we do reach that point the country will to come up with practical measures to allow indoor hospitality and international travel.
The Tanaiste also said that he expects a return of more common viruses in the winter and that the country will have to cope with that.
He added that we will also have to be aware and be prepared for the potential threat caused by new Covid-19 variants.
