The Taoiseach Micheal Martin has ruled out the prospect of a United Ireland border poll in the immediate future saying the issue is far too divisive at this present time.

Speaking to the BBC’s Amdrew Marr Show, Martin said that he doesn’t think that the time for a border poll is right and ultimately doesn’t deal with how the fundamental issue of how we all live and work together on the island of Ireland following Brexit.

Martin told the programme that he would rather that both countries work to inject further momentum into the Good Friday Agreement.

The new Taoiseach also said that the overall objective should be that the UK and the European Union work together in order to provide a strong trade agreement.

He added that he hopes that any future agreement between the UK and the EU would help strengthen Ireland’s trading relationship with the United Kingdom.
