The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has confirmed that the Government is to introduce a legislation which will prevent the privatisation of Irish Water.

The move comes after strong calls to advance legislation for a referendum on the controversial issue, although the Taoiseach has ruled out a referendum.

It is believed that many fear that Irish Water is in danger of becoming privately owned if laws are not changed.

Mr Kenny made his comments as he was speaking in the dail where he told Sinn Féin that he won’t support their proposed legislation for a referendum to enshrine Irish Water as a public utility.

Mr Kenny claims that there is already protections in place for the Water Acts of 2013, but the Coalition Government will further strengthen the issue.
