The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has received a rather hostile reception from 100 protesters in Co Sligo this afternoon.
Mr Kenny was booed and heckled as he arrived at a ceremony to honour the Irish men and women who fought and died in the American civil war, in Ballymoate this afternoon. A number of protesters had also claimed that they would turn their backs on the Taoiseach in silence during the event which paid respects to those who fought and died in the US Civil war. Although some protesters proceeded to shout as the ceremony got under way.
The Taoiseach attended the ceremony along with US Ambassador Kevin O’Malley which jointly unveiled a bronze sculpture of a soldier on horseback. It is understood the new monument is dedicated to the Irish soldiers marking the 150th anniversary of the ending of the Civil War.
