Taoiseach says the possibility of Ireland re-joining the Commonwealth is not on the agenda – following calls from the DUP’s Jeffery Donaldson

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said that the possibility of Ireland re-joining the Commonwealth is something that is not on the agenda at the moment.

Mr Varadkar who was speaking to The Week in Politics programme on RTE, made the comments after the DUP’s Jeffery Donaldson said that he would like to see Ireland return to the Commonwealth.

Mr Donaldson who was invited to attend the Fine Gael National Conference, said he thinks it would be the right move for the Republic of Ireland to return to the Commonwealth as it would give a chance for Ireland’s voice to be heard.

However speaking over the weekend, the Taoiseach said that although he welcomed Mr Donaldson’s appearance and views at the conference, the idea of Ireland re-joining the Commonwealth wasn’t something that the Government have any consideration to.

The Taoiseach also said that he believes that Ireland and the UK can continue to have a working relationship following Brexit, but reiterated that it would be through the Good Friday Agreement rather than the Commonwealth.
