Tax Commission recommends a tax on pizzas and many other processed foods with a new electricity charge

The Tax Commission recommends taxing pizza and many other processed foods with new electricity bills also recommended.

If passed, the new taxes would mean big hikes in property taxes and road tax, as well as excise taxes the likes of pizza, chicken nuggets and French fries.

There should be an additional tax on the electricity consumed by households, a sales tax on highly processed foods such as pizza, a large increase in property taxes and road tolls, the tax commission has recommended.

The government-appointed group’s controversial report, just released, calls for a radical overhaul of tax and benefit systems over the next 10 to 15 years to finance climate change and a future of lower taxes for businesses.

A controversial Commission proposal is a tax on highly processed foods to discourage people from buying them.

That would mean family favorites like pizza, chicken nuggets and fries would be subject to excise duty. No VAT is currently charged on groceries.
