Starting on December 1st, taxi charges will increase by nine percent, reports Breaking News.
The increase has been authorised by the National Transport Authority after the National Maximum Taxi Fare was reviewed. The NTA claims it reflects the growth in operational expenditures.
The authority claims that by implementing this change, which will go into effect on December 1st, rates will continue to reflect growing expenses, reports Breaking News.
Every two years, there is a review that precedes the modification.
Over the next few months, taxi meters will be modified to accommodate the new rate structure, reports Breaking News.
Additionally, the NTA said that the “special rates” that are now in effect for taxi rides between 8 p.m. on Christmas Eve and 8 a.m. on Stephen’s Day and 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and 8 a.m. on New Year’s Day will remain in effect.
The “special rates” will be in effect under the new arrangement from midnight to four in the morning on Saturday and Sunday, which is the weekend peak period. According to the NTA, the purpose of maintaining the higher charges is to encourage more drivers to participate in the nighttime economy, reports Breaking News.
