TD says “we need to start trusting people to exercise their own judgement” as 10,000 fines issued for breaking 5k cordon with just 100 fines given to over 65s

Independent TD for County Clare, Michael McNamara has issued a welcome statement on Twitter saying:

“We need to start trusting people to exercise their own judgement, Particularly as the weather improves, we’re going to see how people gather outdoors.
But also we do need to start trusting people and maybe educating people more rather than just prescribing rules again and again.” Reports Newstalk.

Mr McNamara’s plea comes as Gardai reveal they have issued more than 10,000 fines for people leaving home without a reasonable excuse.
Newstalk outlined that of the 10,000 fines handed out, only 100 (1%) of fines were given to the over 65 year-old age group with the vast majority being given to the younger generations with no underlying conditions.
