A 14 year old boy is in critical condition in Portincula Hospital in Ballinasloe after getting himself into difficulty while swimming in the River Shannon this evening.

It is believed that the young boy was swimming with friends near the Athlone Sub Aqua Clubhouse beside the railway bridge over the river.

After a 15 minute search the boy was taken from the river by members of the sub aqua club who were assisted by the RNLI’s Coosan Point unit.

He was resuscitated on the river bank and brought to Portincula hospital, Galway by ambulance.

His condition is said to be critical.
