Dutch authorities have detained two teenage boys while investigating the death of a 60-year-old man who they believe may have been assaulted following a dispute involving snowballs.
Emergency crews were called to an incident in the city of Schiedam but were unable to revive the man, who died on Monday, reports RTE.
Officers traced the two teenagers using CCTV images and are questioning them to establish what involvement they may have had.
“A fight may have broken out after snowballs were thrown, and blows were exchanged,” Dutch police said in a statement, reports RTE.
“The investigation is ongoing to determine exactly what they did or said.”
Local broadcaster Rijnmond reported that police believe a group of teenagers had been throwing snowballs at passing vehicles, reports RTE.
According to Rijnmond, the victim made remarks about the behaviour, after which a confrontation occurred.
As with much of western Europe, the Netherlands has been dealing with severe winter conditions that have covered the country in snow and caused widespread transport disruption, reports RTE.
