Terror experts are investigating a machete attack on NYPD that left three officers injured.

A man with a gun attacked officers outside the security cordon for the main festivities in Times Square around 10pm on New Year’s Eve.

Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell told reporters: “Unprovoked, a 19-year-old male approached an officer and attempted to strike him over the head with a machete. The male then struck two additional officers in the head with the machete,” reports Sky.

It is known that one of the attacked, injured in a minor way, shot the suspect in the shoulder, allowing his arrest.

All three officers have non-life threatening injuries. One has a fractured skull while another is said to have a deep cut.

But law enforcement is said to be investigating whether the man who allegedly attacked the officers had previously posted so-called jihadist writings online and that he traveled to New York City to specifically target police.

Sky News affiliate NBC News reported that the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force was involved in the investigation.

The celebrations in Times Square were unaffected by the 911 response to the attack.

Police believe no one else was involved.
