The age of splurging: Dublin City Council spends €85k on carpets for just two rooms at Mansion House

There is no limits to the grandiose irreverence shown by those at the top.

While the people at the bottom rung of society suffer cuts and austerity, two rooms at the Dublin City Council offices have been given a rather plush makeover.

Carpets worth €85k have been laid at Dublin’s Mansion House, in a move which has rightfully sparked controversy.

On top of the €85,139 spent on them, a further 4k were used for “consultancy” on the items.

According to the council, the rooms in question are “used on a regular basis” and they are not “museum rooms.”

But the question of priorities was raised by Independent TD Finian McGrath. He said that “€90,000 would go a long way to funding a shelter or a house or two for people who are homeless. That money could be used to refurbish senior citizen complexes throughout the city.”
