The cost of motor insurance premiums rose dramatically by 42% despite cost of claims falling since 2009

Average motor insurance premiums in Ireland increased by 42% between 2009 and 2018, although average insurance costs per policy decreased by 2.5% over the same period, reports RTE.

Statistics also show that the average court costs for motor vehicle civil liability claims, which were resolved in proceedings between 2015 and 2018, amounted to € 23,031.

This corresponds to only € 1,385 for claims resolved directly and € 753 for those settled through the Injury Assessment Committee (PIAB).

The data are included in the Central Bank’s first private automobile insurance report in the national claims database.

It was created in 2017 on the recommendation of the Cost of Insurance Working Group.
