Boris Johnson “looking at” decriminalisation of non-payment of BBC television licence fee

Newly re-elected British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is reportedly looking at carrying out one of his most popular election promises and possibly decriminalising non-payment of the TV licence fee which he had branded a tax.

In a move seen by some as a direct challenge to the BBC, Johnson is believed to be contemplating small civil fines if someone doesn’t pay it, but this hasn’t been officially announced by his party.

The deeply unpopular TV licence, which is used by the British government to fund the state broadcaster, as it is used in Ireland for the same, is a £154.50 per annum charge.

The announcement that Prime Minister Johnson tasked his closest aides with drawing up a full-scale review of the fee. Already with this news emerging from the UK, some social media users in Ireland have already called for similar action to be taken here in relation to the TV licence which is used to fund RTE.
