The counties with the highest number of drink-driving checkpoints last year have been published

An average of three drivers were tested for driving under the influence of alcohol at each Garda checkpoint last year, but the number of drivers varied widely across Garda wards across the country.

New figures released by the Department of Justice show that around 150,000 drivers have been breathalyzed at around 50,000 mandatory drug checkpoints set up by the Gardaí in 2022, reports Breaking News.

Statistics show that 4.5 percent of the nation’s 3.3 million licensed drivers had shortness of breath last year.

Drivers in Waterford were 9.2 per cent more likely to take a breathalyzer test at a checkpoint by 2022 – 7,864 tests in total, reports Breaking News.

Dáil’s Leas-Cheann Comhairle, Catherine Connolly, said the minister had no official responsibility to the Dáil for the issue as it was a matter for the Garda Commissioner.

Ms Murphy said the allegations about officers assigned to the Garda traffic police unit were “very worrying”, reports Breaking News.
