The DUP says Boris Johnson is not taking sides as Northern Ireland protocol debate rages on

Northern Ireland seems to be the main focus of the British government since the recent general election there. They have propositioned that they may have to relook at the Northern Ireland protocol, something that Simon Covoney says he fears will happen.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited Northern Ireland today as the political impasse over post-Brexit trade rules worsens, Sinn Féin leader Michelle O’Neill said.

“I’ve spoken with Boris Johnson himself. He will be here on Monday. I intend to put it to him directly that he needs to stop pandering to the DUP (Democratic Unionist Party),” O’Neill told reporters.

The move comes after Stormont Assembly failed to elect a new speaker after the DUP said it would not support the process as part of its protest against the Northern Ireland Protocol.

The current situation stops the Assembly from functioning.

The DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson has said that the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is not taking sides over the issue.
