Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has joined the City of Sanctuary Network, designating the border town a safe haven for refugees and asylum seekers. The decision, finalized at a contentious council meeting on October 6, has sparked outrage among residents who fear an influx of migrants will strain resources and depress property values.

Hundreds protested last month under the Locals First Initiative, displaying Irish tricolours and expressing anger over the policy. Critics, including DUP councillor Henry Reilly, argue the decision lacked public input and could burden ratepayers with costs for supporting newcomers, diverting funds from locals amid an immigration crisis.

Sinn Féin and SDLP councillors defend the move, stating it promotes integration for those already present and counters misinformation fueling anti-migrant sentiment. However, opponents reference U.S. sanctuary cities, where relaxed enforcement is linked to 10-15% drops in house prices due to perceived risks. In Newry, where homes average £180,000, estate agents note growing buyer hesitation, with some describing the market as unsettled.

As racial tensions rise, evidenced by recent incidents, Newry’s community cohesion is fraying. For many residents, the sanctuary status feels like a betrayal, turning their town into a frontline of global migration challenges.
