The head of EU offers ‘heartfelt apology’ to Italy over disastrous coronavirus response

The President of the European Commission “heartfelt apology” to Italy for not helping at the start of the deadly coronavirus epidemic.

Ursula von der Leyen told the European Parliament “too many were not there… when Italy needed”.

Many Italians have criticised the EU’s response to the pandemic, saying that the bloc has not done enough to help.

The country has registered more than 21,000 deaths from the virus, the highest in Europe.

Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio welcomed Von der Leyen’s comments and described them as “an important act of truth”.
