20-year-old Sharista Giles was in her fifth month of pregnancy when she was involved in a car crash that left her in a coma.
Doctors in the Tennessee hospital where Ms. Giles was being looked after were able to deliver the baby, who weighed in at just two pounds at birth, but informed her family that she would probably never wake up from the coma.
However, the miracle happened this week, once again proving the human body’s resilience to trauma and adversity.
Sharista opened her eyes last Wednesday, and the first thing she saw was a photograph of her baby, who now weighs a healthy six pounds and four ounces.
Hundreds of messages of support have been posted on Facebook, and both mother and baby are said to be doing well.
