
Between 2015 and 2025, the number of births registered in Ireland fell by 11,784, representing a decline of almost 18 per cent, reports Breaking News.
According to new data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO), the number of registered births dropped from 65,909 in 2015 to 54,125 in 2025, reports Breaking News.
Over the same decade, the average age of first-time mothers rose to 31.8 years in 2025, an increase of 1.1 years compared with 30.7 in 2015, reports Breaking News.
When viewed over a longer 20-year period, the average age has increased by 3.1 years, rising from 28.7 years in 2005, reports Breaking News.
The figures also show that 35,587 deaths were registered in 2025, an increase of 414 compared with 35,173 recorded in 2024, reports Breaking News.
People aged 65 and over accounted for the vast majority of deaths, making up 83.3 per cent of the total, or 29,645 deaths, reports Breaking News.
Among those under 55, the leading causes of death were malignant neoplasms (cancer) with 852 cases, external causes of injury and poisoning with 631 cases, and diseases of the circulatory system with 477 cases, reports Breaking News.
These three categories accounted for 67.4 per cent of deaths within that age group, reports Breaking News.
