“The real reason she resigned” – Nicola Sturgeon’s husband arrested over massive finance inquiry

The husband of former Scottish First Minister and SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon has been arrested in connection with an ongoing inquiry into the party’s funding and finances.

Social media users are accusing the former Scottish leader of truly resigning over the issue.

Police Scotland said a 58-year-old man, believed to be former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell, is in custody and being questioned by detectives.

As part of the investigation, officers are also conducting searches at various addresses, reports RTE.

A report will be sent to the Crown Office and the Procurator Fiscal Service.

The inquiry is looking into what happened to more than £600,000 raised by Scottish independence campaigners in 2017, which should have been set aside for spending on that issue, but was missing from the party’s deposit accounts.

Ms Sturgeon resigned as party leader and First Minister of Scotland last month.

A Police Scotland statement said: “A 58-year-old man has today … been arrested as a suspect in connection with the ongoing investigation into the funding and finances of the Scottish National Party. The man is in custody and is being questioned by Police Scotland detectives,” reports RTE.

In a statement, the SNP said: “Clearly it would not be appropriate to comment on any live police investigation but the SNP have been cooperating fully with this investigation and will continue to do so. At its meeting on Saturday, the governing body of the SNP, the NEC, agreed to a review of governance and transparency – that will be taken forward in the coming weeks,” reports RTE.
