By now we have all seen the video of at least two male Gardai raiding a near empty Catholic Church in Athlone, Co. Westmeath during a Sunday Mass being conducted in Latin.
Catholic Arena, a group of lay Catholics, has called the action of the Gardai “shocking” saying “the government plans to allow groups of 15 to meetup to play the bongos from Monday, but not a single person can legally attend Mass”.
The Gardai showed zero respect for the sacred space that they trampled all over. They also rode all over the millennia old law that a church is a place of sanctuary.
Irish Catholics are calling for a full investigation into this shocking behaviour by the Gardai in Athlone and calling for an apology from Drew Harris. In all the years of the bitter war in Northern Ireland, we never saw anything like this happen in the North of Ireland by the RUC.
Many are asking why the Gardai raided the church instead of waiting outside until the Mass had finished.
