The threat of Russian influence on politics taken very seriously, Harris says

The Taoiseach has stated that the national security agencies take claims that Russia is attempting to sway an elected official “very seriously,” reports Breaking News.

While he was constrained in what he could say when it came to questions of national security, Simon Harris told reporters in Washington, DC, “I think we need to be alert in Ireland to the fact that we’re not immune from Russian influence.”

“Russia is a country that seeks to actively influence public debate and discourse, and I think it’s also the statement of fact to say that that level of activity has increased by Russia since their brutal illegal invasion of Ukraine, and therefore the gardai and our security services obviously monitor these matters very closely,” reports Breaking News.

He added: “There are bad actors who seek to influence and distort public discourse,” reports Breaking News.

It follows news from The Sunday Times that an Irish lawmaker was enlisted by Russian intelligence to serve as an agent during Brexit talks. The politician went by the name “Cobalt” in the publication.

When asked if Cobalt should reveal their identity in order to prevent rumours about other politicians spreading, Mr. Harris stated that his top concern was ensuring that security forces have the authority necessary to protect the nation, reports Breaking News.
