Heroes: Bystanders carrying out lifesaving CPR is up 25% in 10 years

In cases of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, bystander CPR increased by 25% between 2012 and 2023, according to a research by the HSE National Ambulance Service, reports Breaking News.

When someone witnesses or discovers a cardiac arrest, they can intervene to do CPR, which is known as bystander CPR.

In all, 2,857 occurrences of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in 2023 involved ongoing resuscitation following the arrival of emergency medical personnel, reports Breaking News.

The rise in bystander intervention, according to Professor Conor Deasy, clinical head of emergency and acute care at Cork University Hospital and chair of the Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Register (OHCAR), is “great”.

“In line with previous years, surviving patients were more likely to be younger and have been witnessed to collapse in a public urban location. Knowing what to do; ring 999/112, put your phone on a speaker while speaking to the 999 call taker and start chest compressions,” he said, reports Breaking News.

“Members of the public defibrillated 304 patients, of whom 89 survived (29 per cent). This achievement emphasises the importance of Community First Responders and Public Access Defibrillators in saving lives,” reports Breaking News.
