The acting Tanaiste and Labour party leader Joan Burton has revealed that she believes there could yet be another General Election after she wrote to party colleagues telling them to be prepared for such a scenario.

Ms Burton believes another election could in fact happen given the “current uncertainty” around government talks meaning it “cannot be ruled out”. The current Labour party leader also added: “Accordingly, our general secretary is making provision for that and has been in touch with candidates in recent days.

“We will be ready should another election occur.” However the Tanaiste did sate that other parties and the Independents had been given a mandate to govern and should “step up to the plate”.

Before adding: “Most of the members I’ve been speaking to in recent days and weeks feel the same.

“Fianna Fail appear unwilling to participate in government, Sinn Fein are determined to be dstructive in opposition and Fine Gael have failed to reach any agreement on a minority administration with the Independents.

“It was therefore unsurprising Fine Gael turned to us in recent days.”
