The world should not panic about the Omicron variant, WHO announces

The world shouldn’t panic about the new Omicron variant of Covid-19, but they should prepare, the World Health Organization (WHO) said.

At a conference, WHO chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan said the situation is now very different from a year ago.

According to reports, Omicron has been found in nearly 40 countries.

It’s not yet clear whether the highly mutated variant is more transmissible or better at escaping vaccines.

Early data from scientists in South Africa, where the variant was first discovered, suggests Omicron may escape some immunity to Covid-19, although experts warn that the analysis is not final.
