There’s less gardai trying to catch people speeding than there were this time last year

The number of gardai hiding in bushes around the country trying to catch people speeding have fallen.

The traffic policing unit has 655 officers – a drop from 659, a trend that continues to fall.

Gardai say that 173 people have been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drink or drugs as part of the Halloween Bank Holiday weekend road safety campaign.

They also say that some 1,000 drivers have been caught speeding since Thursday morning – some of whom were just a few klm over the speed limit.

Either way, it’s a thankless job that sees gardai getting much abuse over.
