“They can keep their big money” – ‘no compelling case’ to further change support for Ukrainians, says Harris

The Taoiseach has said that there isn’t a “compelling case” to alter the way the State helps Ukrainians escaping the conflict, reports Breaking News.

In response to enquiries concerning rumours that lodging will not be provided for Ukrainian immigrants coming in Ireland starting in March, Simon Harris stated that it is true that an interdepartmental working group comprised of “senior officials” discusses such policies.

He clarified, though, that Cabinet had not recommended the change.

The financial assistance for newly arrived immigrants from Ukraine was reduced earlier this year.

Speaking in Washington, DC, Mr. Harris stated that the system need to be continuously examined, but he also added: “We’ve made a lot of changes in relation to Ukrainian people coming to Ireland – I think we’re at the outer limits of that now and I don’t see a compelling case, being very honest, for more changes,” reports Breaking News.

According to Mr. Harris, cabinet-level proposals to impose a fee on job-seeking asylum applicants are anticipated this month.

The government wants those who seek refuge and have earnings to pay for the services and housing that the state provides them.

Applicants for international protection may request a work permit once their application has been pending for five months; the permit will expire after six months.

Mr Harris said: “Where Government’s focus should be in terms of migration is now more at some of the work that needs to be done around the international protection side, including, in my view, that we should introduce a contribution, a charge, for people who are working and have means. I’d hope and expect a proposal to come to Cabinet this month on that,” reports Breaking News.
