“They’re getting paid to do it and a lot of overtime” – Mixed reactions to Gardai not wanting to relax 5km cordons as it will “make the job even more challenging”

There has been mostly a negative reaction to gardai’s calls to keep the 5km rule in place as it’ll make their job more challenging when the draconian restrictions finally get eased from April 12th.

Many people are saying on social media that gardai signed up to do their job, swore an oath and are getting paid a lot of overtime to cover checkpoints during the pandemic while many others are vastly out of pocket.

Some on social media are saying that the gardai have “let the power go to their heads” and that “they’ve lost the confidence of the people” as a result of what they’ve done over the past 14 months.

With the longest and strictest lockdown in Europe, the Irish Community is expecting a relaxation of the 5km cordons which are currently being enforced by the Gardai around the country.

However, according to Breakingnews.ie, Antoinette Cunningham, the general secretary of the Association of Garda Sergeant and Inspectors (AGSI) has warned that any easing of the 5km travel restriction will make policing the pandemic even more challenging.

Speaking to RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Ms Cunningham said that changes to the 5km limit mean the public will think they can move more freely which “is going to make the job even more challenging”.

What do you think of the situation with the gardai? Have the public lost faith in the force?
